Not a new bird for me but a first for my boat trip on jozini - two juvinile lesser flamingo (and a lesson on "never assume anything").

In my defence it was my favorite sort of day for the dam (mine but seldom my guests) wild, windy and wet with piles of storm clouds on the mountains - greys, steel blues and greens all round - magical. The bouncing of the boat though does make species recognition difficult so the conversation went something like this

"and over there - those two whitish birds with their heads down - yellowbilled stalks" (and then just as I was about to launch into a discussion of their hunting methods) "hang there is something different there - not stalks - are they - can't be - they are FLAMINGOS"

A great sighting on a steel blue day

awesome, Jean ;-))) we have had a lot more lesser flamingo juveniles here too, I like to think it's due to Mark Anderson's hard work in Kimberley ;-))

Yellowbilled Stork :P
I've never seen Flamingo Juveniles in real life but only photos depicting them. They look so odd when they young, somehow they don't seem to match their body!
