Tree Swallow

Tree Swallow (by Robinsegg)

 Tree swallow by Robinsegg

I chose Robinegg's Tree Swallow to be this week's FBOTW.  The photo is a combination of a beautiful composition and excellent timing. Robin lives in Salt Lake City and watches birds in an area called the greater Great Basin.

Robin told me she recently posted two images on flickr, one entitled Glover's Lane and the other, Pumpkin Patch.  She continued to explain that this is very close to the location where the image was shot, although a few years apart.

"We bird in this area often as it hosts a great number of birds, especially during spring and fall migration. We were not at this location looking for Tree Swallows but rather shorebirds and migrating waterfowl in the area's playas and ponds. While watching the Coots, GBH and other birds with their nest building activities, I noticed the activity surrounding the rusted pipe in the image. The individual on the pipe was defending his perch from repeated attempts to gain control of the water supply contained in the pipe.  The situation was rather amusing since the location of the pipe was adjacent to a pond. I snapped perhaps a dozen or so shots while all of this was going on and caught the image posted to flickr in this sequence".

Robin used a Nikon D70 at that time(currently using a D300 for wildlife) and a Nikkor 70-300mm lens.
