Browsing the Flickr Pool of GBT I stumbled over this very pretty photo .

A Blue-breasted Kingfisher (Halcyon malimbica, or Martin-chasseur à poitrine bleu in french).

Blue-brested Kingfisher (by Jonas Van de Voorde)

Please visit Jonas Van de Voorde’s (who very kindly permitted the publication here ) page to have a look at the photo and to leave a comment.

During our first trip to Africa we discovered Kingfishers for the first time.

Unfortunately these kinds of birds  are an extremely  rare sighting where we live.

From then on these kinds of Birds are still amongst the most striking for me.

We saw all kinds of them so far, Pied Kingfisher, Giant Kingfisher, Malachite Kingfisher, Woodland Kingfisher ( I think the sound of the Woodland is amazing and everyone who ever was lucky enough to hear it will got goosebumps whenever it sounds, I got it as a ringtone for quite a while, and it relocates me to Africa in an instant).

I asked him for some more details and this is what he answers:

''This picture was taken using a Canon EOS 350D and a Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM lens.

It is a Blue-breasted Kingfisher (Halcyon malimbica, or Martin-chasseur à poitrine bleue in french) and it was taken in the Pendjari National Park in Benin, West Africa.

I spotted this Blue-breasted kingfisher sitting on a branch as we were driving back to camp after a day of work during my training course there. This is a common bird in the park and it is quite often spotted when driving near the Pendjari river, which was what we were doing.''
