Is the bird of the year 2008 in Germany.

The  union for environmental protection and conservation (NABU) announced in Berlin the bird of the year 2008.In the past the Cuckoo was called ‘’common’’, but due to the extensive utilization and destruction of his habitat and the related loss of biological diversity in huge parts of Germany, his numbers a declining.

Estimations are that at present between 51.000 to 97.000 breeding pairs still live in Germany. In North Rhine-Westphalia about 6.000 breeding pairs are left, which means a decline in population of about 30 % in 10 years.
