Counting this year, its been three years that I have watched this little male Southern Masked Weaver build the most beautiful little nest in the Fever Tree in the garden at my office.  I have shed tears with him as each time he has built a nest with such pride and dedication it gets ripped to pieces by the young lady he finds to come and investigate it...  Each year I give him a severe talking to and tell him to try harder next time.  The forlorn look on his face as she flies off and he looks down on the ground to the remains of all the hard work..the proud fluttering of a few minutes before a distant memory...

I caught one of my girls outside the other day and told her the story of the little guy as he patiently built his nest.  She is not a bird person at all but asked some questions and I could see her interest was piqued.  I watched daily as he progressed on his building and I held thumbs each morning as I drove in.  He finished building last week and began parading his work of art for all the young ladies to come have a look see.  One just flew passed and didnt give him a second look, one sat in the tree for three whole seconds before moving on, one looked down her beak with complete disdain then moved on and then... one took the bait!  She liked the location, liked the look, complained a bit about the foundations which he quickly worked on and I must commend him on his DIY skills as not many men would have reacted so quickly and with such enthusiasm..

This morning as I was going about doing my thing, the work colleague came darting into my office with a look of absolute joy on her face!  The little lady is now interior decorating!!  It would seem that my lil guy has finally met his match.  Although I lectured him yearly on his location, he knew he would eventually find the lady that had the same ideas and ideals as he had.

I can't wait to hear the patter of tiny feet...

Lovely story Laine! A Southern Masked Weaver has been building his nests in our tree every year as well. He hasn't had much success at all lately. A few years back, he had two females with seven nests. I was very proud of him and recorded all the little details on his new venture (e.g. what time the female left the nest, what she came back with etc.) lol... I must admit that I have shed a few tears over his 'failures' as well. PS: I have named him Olive, hehe...

I will start a thread in the Forum for Archie, i think he deserves it! I brought my camera to work today and took a few quick snaps of him busy with Nest 2. Betty is busy with the inside of her nest and now we await the arrival of Veronica...
