Re: Guinea Pig's European Birding adventures.

lol Easy Laine. Something like this:

The secret is in the first syllable - Sche. Think Afrikaans "gee" and add an "s" in front - sgee. And forget to pronounce the "n" at the end of the word. All good Dutchies use silent n's at the end of their words, very confusing.

If you don't get it right, don't worry, a load of Nazi's were killed by the Dutch Resistance during WWII because the Germans found the word as difficult to pronounce, so it was used as password.

Re: Guinea Pig's European Birding adventures.

Remember telling you about the Tree-creeper that runs UP a tree, and the Nuthatch that races down head first? Well, we got lucky today and Duco got good pics of both! (It carries my name in Copyright but that's Lightroom not cooperating.) To confuse the issue, the Dutch names for these two totally different birds are Boomklever and Boomkruiper.

Re: Guinea Pig's European Birding adventures.

I'm still amazed how the city of The Hague manages to be a cosmopolitan city and country living in one. We walked through an area called Clingendael today close to where we live. Imagine having this as your backyard with a White Stork visiting.

Re: Guinea Pig's European Birding adventures.

Some of the storks may have a South African connection, WTM. lol This one is ringed though so may be one of the crazy ones staying over during winter. I have no idea. I suppose a ringed bird also does normal birdie things like migrating. tongue

The Robin is my favourite too, Laine. They aren't the prettiest maybe but make up for it in attitude. They're not scared of humans at all. Duco's dad, if I remember correctly, had one in the garden that would eat from their hands. cool They have a beautiful song too.

Re: Guinea Pig's European Birding adventures.

I have to report a very special sighting we had yesterday. Photos of the biome, bird and soundclip, if I can figure out how to post that!, coming later when I have more time. cool

We went to a different part of the dunes, about 5km South of where we usually go. The entire biome is different there with plantgrowth not found in the Meijendel dunes. Perfect according to Vogelbescherming Nederland for the Common Nightingale (Luscinia megarhynchos, which we found in large numbers!

It's a reasonably common bird, though endangered, if the plantgrowth in the dunes is just right. So chances of seeing it anywhere else in The Hague is rare to none. Rarely seen because it hides and sings from there. Patience always pays off though.

And yes, it does have an incredible song. That's not just legend. cool
