Excitement is in the Air!

I love this time of the year as far as birding is concerned. Insects are starting to become alive once again and everywhere one can see birds hawking insects, especially around dusk. One also just never knows what to expect. These past 2 weekends I recorded nice migrants such as Lesser Striped Swallow, Red-breasted Swallow and Ruff. It is also normally at this time of the year when something special might pop up in the Gauteng area.

Get out there and if you find something special, let us hear about it at once!

Re: Excitement is in the Air!

A family of Green Woodhoopoes is busy moving into our one nesting log, much to the consternation of the resident Black collared Barbets. At the moment there's a ding-dong battle going on, with Cape Glossies giving alarm calls, and a lot of fluttering and cackling and chorteling from other assorted birds coming to watch the "chick" fight.

Down boy!! These are birds of the feathered kind. The Woodies have now moved into their new home, one is inside the nest and the others are hanging around teasing the cat and making quite a lot of really weird, funny noises. They are real clowns. I am very happy that they are here, hope they stay.

Re: Excitement is in the Air!

sounds very entertaining, Boskat wink...do you have any photos of them in the garden yet?

It is definitely "that time of year" in our garden too, the Cape Sparrows are getting into the type of aerial combat I didn't know they were capable of LOL! and the weavers, well they have upped their game too roll

Watched the other morning as a very young mouse took on a Speckled Pigeon at one feeder, it literally, in all honesty, stood on it's hind legs and bared it's teeth at the pigeon, the pigeon's expression was priceless...and the pigeon actually backed off yikeslol

Our new neighbours.... very noisy, but exciting to watch the comings and goings.

Re: Excitement is in the Air!

I'll talk to the "boss", see what we can do. Of course they hate my cat, and the feeling is mutual, she drags her fat belly up the tree, and sits there miaauing at them, while they swear at her. (She hasn't managed to catch a bird for about 3 years, everytime she runs she gets a speed wobble, it's hilarious to watch).
