Re: Rarities Sightings Board

Okay, there are a few Godwits to be found at Seeberg, but the guys with the spotting scopes (one in particular who defs knew his birds) seem to think the bird dead centre(rusty colour) in the pick below, is the one...but it refused to lift its wings all morning, so no confirmed sighting...the people are arriving continuously at the hide, some very nice spotting scopes came walking past too!

Re: Rarities Sightings Board

well if confirmation does happen that it was that bird, I will be thrilled as they(some of the birders that were there) are apparently staying there for the day and some tomorrow as well, but I wont be ticking it! wink

Re: Rarities Sightings Board

ookay and weekend plans have changed, my dad went to look for the tern late arvie and bumped into 2 Durban birders who are quite convinced it's an Elegant, but say the bird is only there in the late arvie, so he changed out trip to Saturday late arvie and we will be going out from Port Owen as we set out too late for the long trip round.

Re: Rarities Sightings Board

sadly it seems that no one could confirm seeing it yesterday - as one birder put it the morale is lower than the tide..

Re: Rarities Sightings Board

I never even bothered to go look for the Tree Pipits the other day.

And I will tell you why:

1. I cannot stand to bird with a crowd!
2. I cannot stand one oke saying that his friend's grandma's dog walker saw the bird in that morning when everyone else dipped on it.

lol

Re: Rarities Sightings Board

yeah I must say I am quite used to having the hides on the Weskus to myself, most there ever is, is one or 2 other people, the crowds arriving yesterday made me decide to wait it out before going again...also that Seeberg hide is built really oddly, basically only the front 3 people have a nice view of the one side.

Re: Rarities Sightings Board

I actually prefer finding the birds myself. I will chase if there is not too much effort involved, but driving 3 hours for a Tree Pipit is crazy, not even to mention driving 30 hours for a Weskus vagrant you need a scope for to spot.

Two of my most favorite chases were the Cuckoo Finch on my way to work on the same road. And the Green Sandpiper at Northern Farms, purely because I wanted to see what the area looked like in summer.

Other than that I can't really remember chasing anything other than the Dwarf Bittern at Kgomo-Kgomo which I dipped on and the Caspian Plovers in hospitable conditions in Devon, which we also dipped on. Devon did produce a few other nice lifers though.

Finding that African Finfoot @ Bora was also one of my most enjoyable birding moments.

Re: Rarities Sightings Board

I will chase, but it must be fun though...the boat trip will be really lekka, have always wanted to do that bit of river by boat, and going to the WCNP is of course always lekka...I have to admit, I am a teensy bit tempted to head up the other coast for an alleged Eurasian Oystercatcher sighting neutral LOL...but that's one particular GBT Flickr member's fault(winnu-Nigel), man he has the MOST beautiful shot's of that bird!
