Re: Guinea Pig's European Birding adventures.

We went walking in the Haagse Bos this afternoon and found the Eurasian Buzzard again. This time Duco managed this photo of it:

We didn't make any changes to the photo like cropping or such. Just resized in Irfanview. cool

Re: Guinea Pig's European Birding adventures.

We went for a 5 hour walk in the dunes at Meijendel yesterday. I was bone tired and sore when we returned but what a place to spend a day out in.  http://www.dunea.nl/renderer.do/clearSt … age/60539/
We had 3 great sightings. The first was a Skylark (Alauda arvensis). We couldn't get pics of it but it was unmistakeable. First we heard the call, waited and spotted the bird flying straight up from the grasses, singing all the way, then tumbling down to earth like a rock. Quite a sight. cool

Then:

Whooper Swan (Cygnus cygnus)

This was a very good sighting since the Whooper is not a common bird in the Netherlands. It's the second time we've seen them from the birdhide at Meijendel. They obviously feel as comfortable in the peace of the area as we do. big_smile

Re: Guinea Pig's European Birding adventures.

The third bird was a very beautiful little duck which we hope to find at the birdhide during summer! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smew Note the white and black duck at the top of the pic in the article is wearing summer's colours. We saw them in winter's colours yesterday.

Re: Guinea Pig's European Birding adventures.

@Laine - I never even knew there were different swan species before I came here. lol I knew the swan that I posted a few posts back. The Whooper you're not likely to see in SA unless it's in some zoo or such. It's closely related to the Trumpeter Swan of Northern America.

@Jay - It's great to be out and about again. Especially since Meijendel is now on the cards. It's 7km outside The Hague in a separate municipality - Wassenaar. It's a very affluent area. Like Houghton or Waterkloof Rif. Walking to the bus stop yesterday, a Ferrari Testarossa approached and pulled into a yard. Now 6ft concrete walls and such do not exist here. Your fence is shrubs maybe 3ft high. The Ferrari sleeps out in the open, right by the gate. We even saw a wild deer happily grazing in a garden with no gates. lol You don't want to get caught in the dunes in bad weather since Wassenaar is 2.5km from the Visitor Centre. So winter visits are done with caution and summer ones with lots of water since there is no water to drink. It is however worth the effort as it's rated as one of The Netherlands' top birding destinations.
